Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid and selenium are required by the body to produce the super antioxidant glutathione peroxidase, a powerful anti-aging free radical scavenger of particular benefit in detoxification of the liver.

Alpha Lipoic acid is found in meat and vegetables, especially spinach, although it may be lost by freezing. It is also water soluble, so it can be lost by boiling too.

The effects of alpha lipoic acid are most likely partly the effects of glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione works with vitamin E and C and may help to conserve them as free radical fighters. It can protect the liver and the eyes, preventing glaucoma.

The recommended dosage for alpha lipoic acid is from 50 to 100mg. So far it has been used to treat heart disease, stroke and cataracts.

The body needs alpha lipoic acid to produce energy in the mitochondria. Normally the body produces enough for this purpose. When there is an excess of alpha lipoic acid it then acts as an antioxidant.

Alpha lipoic acid also protects the mitochondria and DNA. It is being studied as a preventative for many age related diseases including Alzheimer's and decline in energy, strength, immunity and the brain.

Conclusion

The effect of alpha lipoic acid is very similar to that of acetyl l-carnitine, as it protects the brain from aging and may be able to restore youthful energy levels and metabolism.
