Your body's dry body mass is more than 50% protein. You need to take in protein daily to prevent muscle wasting, but not too much. The only way to increase your body's protein needs is through very strenuous workouts (that means 4-6 hours a week of intense activity).

One gram of protein per pound of body mass is a good amount. Most people won't get that from food, so that's why you supplement with protein shakes right?

Just as you don't overdo exercise you don't overdo supplementation either. For example if you want to build strong arms you work them really hard on one day a week only. Likewise taking too much protein only burdens the liver. While excreting the excess protein you are excreting other minerals like calcium too.
